If you’re coming here from the email I sent out I talked about an example of our free freight policy helping a wholesaler win some new business. Here is another example from that same week, unfortunately, not quite as positive. We had a customer call, upset about the high cost of shipping three cases of a hazardous product from STL to Florida. Unfortunately, we can’t offer free freight on everything, shipping heavy, hazardous things from point A to B is expensive, who knew? I regularly get freight rates for our glycol products across the country so I have charts and excel sheets miles long tracking freight over the last 10 years. Maybe I’m just numb to it at this point but in trying to be as transparent as possible, I ran the numbers myself for freight and ground options to ship those 3 cases and shared them with our customer.
An Unfortunate Reality
Ground is extremely costly when shipping hazmat and has a high rate of damage vs freight, freight has gotten expensive, no matter how you slice it but there is something you can do to make it more palatable. I know it’s not always feasible to order more but when you can, look for the opportunity, we offer 200+ SKUS of the most commonly used and a lot specialty products in the HVAC/R space, we have something else you need. The price to ship 30 cases of hazardous material isn’t much more than shipping three. $290 vs $260 to ship it halfway across the country whether it’s 1500 pounds or 150 pounds.
